Thanks to InFirst Bank

Thanks to InFirst Bank for coming aboard as our first Get on the Water sponsor for 2019/2020. Their support helps us progress towards our goal of augmenting outdoor recreation opportunities at the Community Sailing base. We  provides an economical means for visitors to learn to sail and paddle through free instruction and access to boats and safety equipment.

Sailing and Paddling provide physical and mental wellness benefits. They promote fitness and agility, teach discipline and communication, encourage relaxation, and improve concentration.

Update:Need a Tax Break – Got a Sailboat?

UPDATE: we will be able to offer group sailing on two donated Flying Scots this coming season. Thank you to generous donors  Nancy Yaskanich and the Sailing Club of Washington.

March, we’ll be looking for volunteers for cleaning and minor refitting.

We are still looking for one Alcort Sunfish.

The FOYC community sailing program is one of the ways our Friends group contributes to the enjoyment of the park — teaching beginners the rudiments of sailing and providing economical access to sailing for all.

Our fleet consists entirely of donated sailboats, repaired and maintained by volunteers.

We are presently seeking two boats to enhance the program:

1) Flying Scot
This would be used as a “teaching platform” since it can be sailed with anywhere from 2 to 8 people.

2) Sunfish
This is the ideal, one sail for one sailor boat. Great for beginners and experts alike.

If you have access to one of these boats or know of one that might be donated, please let us know at FriendsOfYellowCreek@gmail.com

We have only a modest budget, so we can only accept “complete” boats; but we are happy to clean and have the capacity to make modest repairs and upgrades.

Friends’ Kayak Rack

Thanks to volunteers for installing a kayak rack at the FOYC Community Sailing base. A group of seven volunteers installed a pair of racks on Saturday on the north shore. The original racks were built on the south shore for FOYC by Luke Hamilton for an Eagle Scout project.

Now the racks have been repurposed and are available for friends storage. Would you like to keep a kayak at the park? Are you on the wait list for the McFeeter’s Cove racks? We have 12 bays available on a first-come, first-served basis. Donations of $130 are accepted for a seasonal rack space. (April 15-October 31). In order to fairly meet demand, we limit any family to one slot. Please contact FriendsOfYellowCreek@gmail.com for more information. Kayaks are stored at the owners’ risk; we encourage you to use a cable to lock it to the rack.

Please contact friendsofyellowcreek@gmail.com for more information.

Sailing Base

Many thanks to Jim Tweardy, Shawn Cole and all the staff at Yelllow Creek. With financial support from FOYC, the park accomplished some significant work repairing the shoreline at the sailing base.  Later this month, IUP volunteers will be reseeding the area with grass.

Happily, the park and Camp Seph Mack have donated several docks to the FOYC, so this summer will see a transformed sailing cove.

Come join FOYC in improving the park!  And if you’re interested in sailing, contact FriendsofYellowCreek@gmail.com about plans for group sailing lessons!

Kiosks for Park Information

IMG_2621Congratulations to Eagle Scout, Kory McConnell.   The  Penn Run high school senior approach Friends of Yellow Creek with a great project.  He had identified the need for renovations and replacement of the park’s information kiosks.  These large, sheltered bulletin boards help new visitors to the park learn about trails, safety regulations, even local wildlife.

Kory and his help
ers rebuilt, repaired, and created new kiosks.  He also identified several locations that lacked kiosks but where they could be usefully sited.

FOYC was pleased to help Kory earn his Eagle and to sponsor such a great park improvement.
