About First Sail

First Sail is a nationwide initiative developed by US Sailing with support from sailing schools, community sailing centers, yacht clubs and other sailing industry organizations around the United States. The goal of First Sail is to educate the public on the benefits of sailing as a fun and exciting recreational activity for people of all ages and abilities and connect them with opportunites to get involved. First Sail offers a pathway to participation through resources and information on how to get started and find a place to go sailing.

The First Sail Experience is a two-hour lesson offered to anyone through a growing list of First Sail Locations, comprised of community sailing centers, sailing schools and yacht clubs around the country. This unique opportunity offers beginners an introduction to sailing in a casual setting and is designed to provide a memorable experience that will motivate newcomers to continue sailing. Participants will get out on the water with an instructor in a keelboat provided by the First Sail Location. The First Sail Experience features basic sailing hands-on learning that will cover topics such as, how a sail works, parts of a sailboat, points of sail, and important safety guidelines. Additionally, all First Sail Experience participants will have access to Chapter 1 of Basic Keelboat Online, a US Sailing online training course designed to prepare beginners for their fi rst time on the water.

Sailing 2017

Sailing 2017

Registration is open for Community Sailing at Yellow Creek this summer.  Despite the crazy spring weather, it will soon be launching boats and getting ready to enjoy Yellow Creek.

For summer 2017, we will again be offering free group lessons for FOYC sailing base members.

If you have always wanted to learn to sail, this is the budget deal of a lifetime.  You can enjoy time on the lake and work towards your US Sailing Certification.   As an FOYC fundraiser, you will also have the option of private lessons for a modest fee.

Visit the main Sailing Page for details and registration information.

Last year we customized the group lesson schedule to meet the needs of participants. Please sign up early to insure that we schedule group lessons at a time convenient for you.

YC Fleet News!

Last year FOYC accepted the donation of an O’Day Javelin.  This 14′ foot sloop has a steel centerboard and provides a stable learning platform for beginner and intermediate sailors.

Happily, we acquired a second Javelin in late Fall.

Sails are getting cleaning and repair at Sailcare in Ford City.  We’re looking forward to launching the twin Javelins this Spring!

Many thanks to Jim Tweardy, Shawn Cole and all the staff at Yelllow Creek. With financial support from FOYC, the park accomplished some significant work repairing the shoreline at the sailing base.  Later this month, IUP volunteers will be reseeding the area with grass.

Happily, the park and Camp Seph Mack have donated several docks to the FOYC, so this summer will see a transformed sailing cove.

Come join FOYC in improving the park!  And if you’re interested in sailing, contact FriendsofYellowCreek@gmail.com about plans for group sailing lessons!

Septemberfest Adds Program: Sailing 101

Sailing 101 – Get Outdoors PA, 9/27/14 10am-noon

Yellow Creek State Park, Day Use Area

Join us to explore the sport and art of sailing on Yellow Creek Lake. This two-hour session begins with a lesson on the parts of the sailboat and introduces future sailors to the basics of wind awareness, sail trim, and points of sail. US Sailing Certified instructors will be on hand. After this orientation, in the second hour each student will have the chance to enjoy a short sail accompanied by a experienced sailor (weather permitting).

This event is co-sponsored by the Friends of Yellow Creek and hosted by the IUP Sailing Club. Sailing 101 is part of the annual Septemberfest at the park. Participants are invited to enjoy music, kayaking, paddle-boarding and other activities throughout the day. Following the program, you will also have the chance to see IUP and Pitt sailors compete in round-the-buoys racing.

We will wear PFDs, but to participate, sailors must be physically capable of swimming 50 yards in clothing and shoes.  Your instructors will conduct the class with your safety in mind; like all outdoor activities, sailing entails certain risks. We’ll try to stay dry and capsizes are rare, but waterproof shoes and a change of clothes are recommended.

Pre-registration required. Participation is free but is limited to 12 students over the age of 10 years. To register call the Park Office at (724) 357-7913 or register online at: http://bit.ly/FOYC-Sail101-Fall2014

Donation Thanks

Generous donors have helped Friends of Yellow Creek embark on a new phase in the promotion of sailing at the park. We now have two Escape Captiva sailboats that members who participate in Community Sailing can access.  Do you remember the good old days of the Sailing Base? Well, FOYC is helping to bring back that facility AND we’re gathering a small fleet of boats for community use.

The Escape Captiva is an ideal small dingy for one or two sailors.  Beginners will appreciate its easy righting power (yes, everyone capsizes from time to time.) And more experienced sailors will take advantage of the unique roller furling main sail to challenge themselves with high winds in the Fall!

Friends of Yellow Creek thanks Joe Charny and the Moraine Sailing Club (of Lake Arthur) for these donations.  Contact friendsofyellowcreek@gmail.com for more information on Yellow Creek sailing.
